John McMorrough's review of the Broad Art Museum by Zaha Hadid published in Artforum
John McMorrough, associate professor of architecture and chair of the architecture program has published a review of Zaha Hadid's Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University in the May 2013 issue of Artforum.
The review discusses a variety of relations in the museum, from its context (and its dissimilarity from the same), to orthogonal geometry (and its privileging instead of tilted walls), and framing (of the artwork and city in relation to the disposition of the museum's walls and apertures). These relations are read as indicative of a shift in architectural attitudes, from images to actions. Specifically a migration away from a 1980s interest in representation, whether in Hadid's own paintings, or more generally in architectural approaches focused on the delineation of relations between a project's site and its building figuration.
Instead, the Broad exhibits a more contemporary disposition of architecture's capacity to remake an understating of existential conditions within the specifics of its realization in form and material.
Artforum is an international art journal published out of New York City.
